This collage of a Scottish castle is inspired by the folklore tale that says ‘the castle obtained it’s unusual name from the habit of the members of the house to greet the guests with less discretion that was considered decent for the time. One of the pleasures of Fatlips was that every gentleman, by privilege, kisses one of the ladies on entering the ruin’

Legendary Essex note: Fatlips Castle is a peel tower in Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. Another story suggests the name came from a goat called Fatlips that would bleat loudly to warn of approaching English forces. Another version describes a hermit woman who lived in nearby abbey ruins who claimed that “Fatlips” was a spirit who stamped away moisture with iron boot!
