Terrifying tales of Essex old and new.
The Black Holes of the Battle Ditches, Spiders as big as your hand, Dragons, Witches, an asteroid from outer space and ghostly soldiers – just some of the stories shared by Essex folk so far and immortalised into art at our Summer 2025 Legendary Essex art Workshops, and now being shared on a series of interviews with Touchpoint Radio!

The project celebrated over 300 art submissions on postcards with an exhibition in September 2025 at the 14th Century Old Sun Inn in Saffron Walden, with the collected stories preserved in physical and a digital archive, creating a lasting cultural asset for the region. A big thank you to Culture Essex for supporting us.

Saffron Walden Museum contributed some amazing folkloric artefacts for the exhibition including a 19th C corn dolly and Bellarmine or ‘witches bottle’, and Aine Corr upholstered the Essex folklore Chair replete with Morris ribbons and tea towel maps of Essex for visitors to relax on!

What’s next? We have plans for future exhibitions in Essex, and are busy applying for microgrants to enable us to do this.
