Belief in evil spirits and witchcraft was common in the 15,16 and 17th Century. Spirit traps made from black thorn and thread were placed in paths believed to be frequented by spirits in the hopes that they would be entangled in the threads. Witch bottles containing items such as red thread, horsehair, nails were believed to protect buildings from witches.
