At our Walton on the Naze workshop at The Nose bookshop, 80 year old Mary Ellen brought in a treasured sea scape painting by her friend David Peck. She told us ‘He had wanted an exhibition and managed to set one up in Frinton – it was all set up but there was an almighty storm and no-one could come – then the next day was lockdown. He was quite ill by this time and passed away soon after’.

Mary Ellen wrote this poem and read it aloud to us (this video is on our instagram @legendaryessex):

‘Our Last Day’

How sun glinting on muddy cliffs

Skipped onto sands of ancient times

Sandlings dodging briny froth

Crabs scuttling to the haven of the rocks

Seagulls screaming at the rushing wind

Violent waves crashed but tamed

& gently rippling in the Autumn Sun

Blessed with the beauty of this day

To stop and take our breath away’

Written for my dear friend David Peck, Artist, on our last day.
