Horn Dance was inspired by the Morris Dancers at Thaxted, Essex who perform the Abotts Bromley Horn Dance from the 12th Century every year at sunset outside the town hall. They march in procession in archetypal ‘deermen’; a Fool, Hobby Horse, Bowman and Maid Marian, perform their dance to violin music holding deer heads aloft. Its an ancient ritual celebrating the hunt and fertility. I have a video on my instagram ‘Magic’ highlights on @jpearce_art but if you can – go – it’s ancient magic. Legendary Essex will be at the Thaxted Morris Meet on 31st May!
I created this image by carving into foil card, which I hand inked and printed on an 18th C press to make a small variable edition, I also use the image on t -shirts. Jessica Pearce
