According to legend, Hopkins ghost is said to haunt Mistley Pond. Although Matthew Hopkins life as a ‘witch finder’ is well documented, not much is known about his demise. One account says Hopkins was accused of being a witch himself and forced to undergo his own swimming trial. Some accounts say he drowned, others say he floated and was condemned and hanged.
Legendary Essex note: Out of respect to the many women terrorised and murdered at this brutal time in history the images of this man will be displayed at the exhibition in a dark corner, and the wise women and witches celebrated in a central position.
