A recent school residential trip became the stuff of legend. Bloody handprints on the wall of the bedrooms (!), spooky crashes heard at night and creepy spiders lurking in corners. It is rumoured the teachers got very little sleep too. Exploring the island pupils learned of the bear and ghosts of the island and a lighthouse.
Mersea Island is the most easterly inhabited island in Britain. At full moon and new moon high tides may cover the main causeway – when for a while Mersea becomes a true island.
A Roman Soldier is said to make a ghostly walk along the Strood and armies fighting are said to be heard at high tide.
Legendary Essex would like to recommend a trip to the excellent Mersea Museum, tucked behind the church which is only £2 for adults and free to children.
