Old Style St James Day is celebrated on 5th August and was often celebrated with a fair or festival marking the end of the oyster season. In the reign of James 1 (1603-25) 5th August was one of the days in which church bells rang in his honour to commemorate his escape from Lord Gowrie , known as the Gowrie Conspiracy.
