Funny, mysterious and terrifying stories were told and beautifully illustrated by young artists at Radwinter Primary School this June.
Pupils took inspiration from classic Essex folk tales like the Essex Serpent and the Essex V Suffolk Dragon fight, the Secret tunnels of Saffron Walden and forged their own including: ‘Tale of Lola’s Missing Glasses’, ‘The Giant Disappearing Snowmen of Ashdon’, ‘The Weeping Angel of Esix’, ‘The Bus with 100 steps (it goes to London, Addenbrookes and Australia)’.
Lines quickly blurred between folkloric tradition and wild fantasty producing compelling tales like ‘The Anomaly’ and The Invisible Basilisk fighting a 1000 hearted, Two headed Horse!
Creative collaborations were strong too: a chilling portrait of Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder by two 8 year old boys was particularly impressive!
Amongst the many stories were some accounts of UFO’s seen with parents, worm families in the woods and lots of beautiful pictures of the children’s memories of strawberry picking, local fetes, picnics and museum visits.
Thank you so much Radwinter Primary for having Legendary Essex for the morning, and sharing your creativity and stories with us! What a talented bunch you are! Your work will be up on display alongside other folklore art this Autumn at the Old Sun Inn in Saffron Walden from 9-20 September.
